Pondok Baruna Garden

Smart modern midrange

Pondok Baruna Garden offers appealing spacious, smart and spotless modern rooms housed in brick duplexes around a pool that takes up most of the garden.

Travelfish says:

Tiled air-con interiors gleam and rooms offer a choice of comfortable twin or double beds which sport plump mattresses, crisp white linen and stylish coordinating runners and throw cushions. Simple matching dark wood furnishings complement the pale interiors and have a harmonious look. Lighting and switches are well placed and include bedside lamps.

We did note the lack of minibar, which we would have expected at the midrange price point, but icy cold Bintangs are on hand at the poolside bar and drinking water is supplied in the rooms (in plastic bottles—glass would be better), so it’s not such an issue. Ensuite bathrooms follow the same simple style with glass-brick screened hot-water shower and smart modern amenities. An outside terrace is furnished with a low table and floor cushions, comfortable for lounging about and enjoying the garden, but these may be an issue for folks who have trouble sitting on the floor (although we’re sure you could request a chair).

The large (almost) square pool is an inviting deep blue, but as Pondok Baruna Garden is part of the World Diving empire, it’s often used by dive students. There’s still room for a dip in the shallower section, or nab a sun lounger in the shaded bale.

Breakfast is included in the rate, and for single travellers a 50,000 rupiah discount is offered on the rate (unless of course you’d like two breakfasts). Other snacks and meals are served at the on-site restaurant if you get peckish lazing about in the sun.

Pondok Baruna Garden is a decent midrange pick in this part of the island, but if you can’t live without TV and a minibar, they have a more upmarket property, Pondok Baruna Frangipani, on Jalan Raya Jungut Batu. This property has more spacious but more tired rooms and a prettier swimming pool.

Conversely, for a budget option with an excellent location, a row of simple rooms face the ocean next to the World Dive shop, but we were unable to view these. Pondok Baruna Garden is located a minute from the beach behind World Diving. They offer a 100,000 rupiah discount on the rooms for folk diving with them.

Sally spent twelve years leading tourists around Indonesia and Malaysia where she collected a lot of stuff. She once carried a 40kg rug overland across Java. Her house has been described as a cross between a museum and a library. Fuelled by coffee, she can often be found riding her bike or petting stray cats. Sally believes travel is the key to world peace.
